Why I've quit buy-to-let
03 02 2012

Landlord Patrick Osborne profited from rising rents, generous tax breaks and easy capital gains – so why did he get out?

When Patrick Osborne became a landlord in 2001 he was taken aback by how many friends and acquaintances condemned him. "I'm not going to pretend I fell into it by accident. I made an active decision to do it for income and pension planning. But I was surprised by some of the reactions I got and the level of vitriol towards landlords. I'd only ever had good experiences as a tenant, so this shocked me."

Let's move to: Hathersage, Castleton and Edale, Derbyshire

Rural idyll and rural reality cheek by jowl: a strange but unique mix

What's going for it? I once saw the Garland festival at Castleton, one of those slightly Wicker Man, splendidly batty British traditions where the king for the day is paraded around on a horse with a basket of flowers over his body. It's either deeply pagan, deeply touristy or co-opted to celebrate the restoration of Charles II, depending on your position on such things. And, round here, you have to have a position. I'm at least £800 out of pocket, but landlords are threatening me with court

I own a one-bed flat on a lease. Hot water and central heating is included in the service charge of £3,000 per annum.

Despite my incessant demands, the landlords took...

Investment banking: Bonfire of the bankers
02 02 2012

“IT SUCKED,” says the head of investment banking at one of Europe’s biggest banks, reviewing the fourth quarter of 2011. That succinct assessment will take few by surprise. The sale and trading of bonds and shares slowed to a trickle last year. Analysts at Credit Suisse reckon that investment-banking revenues among the big American banks slumped by a quarter in 2011. Trading bonds, currencies and commodities (activities known as FICC) is the industry’s bread and butter: FICC revenues fell by about 15% in America. Things are even worse in Europe. Credit Suisse reckons that...

Weather derivatives: Come rain or shine
02 02 2012
Perfect weather for wind-up merchants

WEARING lots of layers and a decent waterproof coat is one way to guard against changeable weather. Firms facing losses because of a big freeze or baking sun do not have that option. Insurance companies have long offered cover against flooding, hurricanes and other catastrophes. For less calamitous changes in the weather, derivatives are a better option.

This is still a “niche market”, says Tim Andriesen of CME Group, the exchange where most weather contracts are traded....
